As we continued our “At the Movies” series this weekend, we examined the movie Lion. This movie is based on the true story of Saroo Brierley, a young boy born in an impoverished village in India. Saroo was tragically displaced from his family as a young boy while working with his brother. After surviving alone on the streets, almost being sold into slavery, and being placed in and orphanage, he eventually ended up in a loving home. He learned survival at a tender age.
Most of you probably can’t relate to surviving through these exact circumstances, but are you trying to make it through other life circumstances? Many of you are in stressful job situations, in strained marriages, or having financial trouble. Are you crying out for help? King David says in Psalm 69:3, “I’m hoarse from calling for help, bleary-eyed from searching the sky for God.” Sometimes life leaves us physically, emotionally, mentally, and spirituallyexhausted.
The good news is that when you search for God, you will find Him. Proverbs 8:17 says, “Those who search will surely find me.” Saroo was separated from his family for 25 years. During that time, he never stopped thinking about them. He estimates that as an adult he spent 10,000 hours doing research trying to find his village and family. This was on top of his day-to-day life and job. That’s survival and endurance. What if you sought God with the fierceness Saroo sought his family?
Even though not everything turned out exactly the way Saroo would have liked (or in his timing), his perseverance was worth all the years of searching. He was reunited with his family and found the answers he was looking for. As we see in Scripture, you will find what you’re looking for, too, if you keep seeking God!
But how do we find the strength we need to survive? The Bible instructs us to never give up: “You grew weary in your search, but you never gave up. Desire gave you renewed strength, and you did not grow weary” (Isaiah 57:10). When you have the desire to be an overcomer, you’ll find renewed strength and the will to be a survivor.
