If you’re making life decisions but questioning those decisions, how do you know what’s right? You might still have a bad connection with God, and you need to continue drawing closer to Him. You also need to seek godly counsel. Ask yourself the question, “Does godly counsel agree?” If the spiritual mentors in your life agree with the direction you’re taking, take that as a sign you’re going the right way. Proverbs 12:15 says, “The way of fools seems right to them, but the wise listen to advice” (NIV). Listen to advice, as long as you trust who it’s coming from and know that it’s from a biblical perspective.
When you make a decision and start down a path, how do you feel? You either feel confident and at peace about your decision, or you lack confidence and feel anxious. This is a good tool to rely on. Again, the Holy Spirit is there to direct you, and you should be able to distinguish between right and wrong. The world will make you anxious; God will bring you peace: “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace…” (1 Corinthians 14:33, NKJV).
To be on the right frequency—to be properly tuned into God—how often do you need to tune in? Like I’ve mentioned before, Sunday is not enough. A few times a week is not enough. You have to tune into God every day. Listening to God may not be enough—you also need to tune out things that oppose God. This will help you better hear Him. “They won’t follow a stranger’s voice but will scatter because they aren’t used to the sound of it” (John 10:5, MSG).
Take steps toward what God has spoken! Go back to the promises you see in scripture, words of wisdom from your mentors, and make tuning into God’s frequency a top priority. “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27, NIV). Listen to God, know Him, and follow Him! This is sometimes harder than it sounds, but what a blessing that God has clearly laid out for you the path that leads to Him!
