Earlier this week I discussed Nathan’s message on Jonathan and how he took action! But how can you apply the idea of this kind of faith to your life? The Bible gives clear examples of how to be faithful. “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world” (James 1:27). Are there people in your life who need to be cared for? Nothing is stopping you from taking a meal to someone in need or taking the time to pray with someone.
What about love? Do you need to ask God if you should love those around you? No! “Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments” (Matthew 22:37-40). As Nathan said, “You never need to ask God if you should love the people in your life.” You should always love the people in your life.
Nathan mentioned three things that can help you stay focused. First, you need to share your mission with someone. Think of something that you’re passionate about (something you’d like to see happen or change). This could be an injustice you’d like to see made right. Next, you need to bring what God has given you to the table. You have gifts and skills that can help you with your mission. Finally, take the first step! What’s the first thing you need to do to get on mission?
The church needs even just one man or one woman to do what they’re supposed to do! “And if you’re wondering if it’s you, it is!” Be faithful with the small things in your life so God can entrust you with bigger and greater things! Jonathan went from fighting in battle with Israel by his side, to fighting without them. What Jonathan knew, that we all sometimes forget, is that God is always by our side!
