Do you remember me mentioning Philippians 1:12-13? It says, “ I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel, so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ” (ESV). Can you imagine finding reason to celebrate while in prison? If Paul did it, so can you! Find reason to celebrate, even during a pandemic. You’re celebrating His sovereignty and finding the good that comes out of all situations.
I’m reminded of a camping trip I went on when my kids were little. We encountered a storm and sought safety in our borrowed pop-up. Who hasn’t sought protection from the elements of life, wanting to be lifted out of the valley or to have victory over a virus? If only our storms were limited to wind and rain! We face the big Ds—difficulties, divorce disease, and death. Right now, disease is heavy on people’s minds. Paul knew how to find peace and joy, even as he was chained up in prison awaiting possible execution. “…for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13, ESV). Paul rejoiced in the fact that God was in control.
In the Bible, you can see that both Paul and Daniel understood that having peace of mind doesn’t come from being in control. In fact, anxiety decreases when your understanding of your heavenly Father increases. Remember how He gives you reason to celebrate? Celebrate His mercy (Philippians 3:13-14)! A happy saint is one who’s at the same time aware of the severity of sin and the immensity of grace. Instead of focusing on the negative effects of the virus, focus on His promises. I love this quote from Max Lucado: “The contagiously calm person is the one who reminds others, ‘God is in control.’” Make calm contagious!
Today, I want you to focus on prayer, not despair! And specific prayer creates a lighter load. As my wife Michelle said on Sunday, “As you sense anxiety welling up inside you, cast it in the direction of Christ. Do so specifically and immediately…” You can take any problem or anxiety you have to the cross. There’s nothing too big for God to help you with!
