Christmas is drawing closer, and so many things remind me of the birth of Jesus. Our key verse at church yesterday was Hebrew 1:1-3. “Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe. The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God, and he sustains everything by the mighty power of his command. When he had cleansed us from our sins, he sat down in the place of honor at the right hand of the majestic God in heaven” (NLT). This is a description of who Jesus was and is. It helps you answer the “Who’s that baby?” question!
Let’s take a closer look at who Jesus is. He is the heir of all things. This means that God gave Him everything He had—His deepest oceans, the moon, the highest mountains! While Jesus is heir, Satan is nothing but a squatter! He illegally claims the earth as his own, and he will be overthrown. Who’s there when you come to the end of everything? It’s certainly not Satan. Jesus is the one who is there for you!
You also need to understand that Jesus is the creator of the universe (Hebrews 1:2). At the Father’s command, He brought the universe into being, and He wrote the script for the unfolding ages. Through Him, God made everything. There are really only two choices you can make when studying the universe. Either you believe that everything is the result of infinite time plus blind chance, or you believe that the universe is the result of God’s divine design with all true science leading back to God. Don’t forget that everything was made by Jesus, even this day (John 1:3).
When understanding who Jesus is, don’t forget that He is the radiance of God’s glory! This isn’t like the moon, which merely reflects the light from the sun. No, Jesus radiates light just as God does! This is better understood in the context of the Trinity—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Echad (Hebrew for one) refers to a compound unity, such as one people or one cluster of grapes. Thus, God is a compound unity, a “tri-unity.” One plus one plus one does not equal one. But one times one times one equals one. And that is the mystery of the Trinity. Jesus is essentially God.
There are three more descriptions of Jesus that we’ll look at soon. But for today, let this sink in—you have a creator who loves you and who wants the best for you. That little baby people reference around Christmas time is really the Savior of the world, and He wants to be your Savior.
