Sometimes what’s packaged as disappointment is really destiny. I can imagine the disappointment Joseph felt when he found out Mary was having a baby. But he discovered he was a part of the most beautiful birth in the world. Sometimes God makes the verdict first and the evidence comes later. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1, KJV). Don’t forget that there are a lot of things going on in the unseen. Joseph first had to trust what Mary was saying, trust God’s instruction, and then wait a lifetime to witness the sacrifice Jesus made.
Matthew 1:24 says, “When Joseph woke up, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded and took Mary as his wife” (NLT). After God spoke to Joseph in a dream, he walked in obedience. Just like Joseph, you have to give God the benefit of the doubt. Think of what he would have missed out on if he’d chosen to walk away from Mary! It’s not every day that someone is entrusted to raise the Son of God.
Look at Proverbs 3:5-6! “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight (NIV). This doesn’t mean that you won’t ever face challenges but that God will direct you. Do you remember me saying last week that the Christmas season is actually the most depressing season for some people? Rather than being joyful and celebratory, they’re hit with loneliness. Remember this when you encounter people. Find opportunities to bless others. You never know what someone is going through.
As you shift into Christmas mode over the next couple of weeks, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. Bless others any opportunity you get. One of the best ways you can bless someone is to extend an invitation to church. Most people won’t come to church unless invited, and you could be a part of helping people find hope amidst disappointment.
