Diving further into Jason Garcia’s message from this past Sunday, you see that greatness (measured by humility) looks different to God than to man. There are five ways Jason mentioned you can serve, all of which lead you closer to humility and to God.
First, serve with your family. If you don’t have family in your life, serve with your friends. This is the easiest place for you to start—families can easily be intentional about lending a helping hand to neighbors or doing volunteer projects together. Jason mentioned that service is an antidote for narcissism—take the focus off yourself!
You can also serve the next generation. And, as Jason said, “If you’re going to serve in the church, start with children!” God created them to receive instruction. You can be an influence on your own children, as well as others around you or in your church. When they see you model Christ’s love, that gets imprinted on their hearts and minds, impacting who they will be as adults.
Another action step, aside from serving with the children in your church, is to serve your church in general. Everyone has different gifts and talents. Why would you want to keep them to yourself when you can share them? Finally, you can serve through your finances. Whether this is through tithing, supporting missions, or supporting children in need, giving back is a reward in itself. It is one of the most practical forms of humility.
If you want to take Jason’s advice, do some homework this week and read Philippians 2:1-11! This will help you understand Christ’s humility and how to imitate it. Remember—serving is greatness in action.
