Did you know that greatness isn’t measured by the world’s standards? Jason Garcia reminded us of this at The Summit this past Sunday! What an honor to have him come and speak at our church and minister through the Word.
So how is greatness measured? How do YOU measure greatness? You have to think about what you want your kids to aspire to and become when answering this question. Jason took us through much of Matthew Chapter 20 to explain greatness. Verses 26-28 says that the way to be first is to actually be last, and that it’s through serving others that you become great. This is a mentality we should all have.
Jason reminded us that the key to greatness (in God’s eyes) starts with humility. “In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” (1 Peter 5:5, NIV). Humility is seen in how you treat others and how you act, whether people are looking or not. When you have a servant’s heart, you’re willing to do the small, behind-the-scenes jobs! This is something you want your children to see and model.
Humility is also recognizing your weaknesses and needs and allowing God to work on you. What better way to work on yourself than to deny yourself to help others. Ephesians 2:10 says, “It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others” (TLB). Be who God made you to be, and start helping those around you!
