It’s somewhat ironic how we yell at people who are standing right in front of us. What we have to say seems so urgent, we speak in unnecessarily loud volumes out of anger or to get a point across. Have you ever yelled at God out of anger? Or, have you ever wished He would speak audibly to you when you’re desperate for His help? While people have heard Him speak audibly before (we see examples of this in the Bible), most of us hear His voice on a spiritual level, as a whisper.
In first Kings 19:12, we see an example of Elijah hearing God’s gentle whisper: “And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.” The reason God whispers is because He’s right there with you! And God doesn’t lead you to valleys or wildernesses but THROUGH them.
“He says, ‘Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth’” (Psalm 46:10). Do you take time to be still and listen for God’s voice? The busier you are, the easier it is for His voice to be drowned out. We hear noise and voices from family, co-workers, people out in public, people on the radio and media…there are voices all around. Don’t forget that God’s voice and His promises are what you should be holding true to. These noises seem to get louder around Christmas time. Spend personal time with God and in His Word this week so you can stay focused.
Whether you’re walking through the valley or the wilderness, you have a God who never leaves your side. You can walk in confidence knowing He’s always there!
