If you’re like me, you’ve been programmed to believe that more is always better, that having more stuff is always better. Much of my life, I thought that if one is good, then two is better. However, Ecclesiastes 4:6 tells us, “Better is one handful with tranquility than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.” Why is one handful better than two? Because if you have one hand free, and someone needs your help, you can give them a hand up. If both of your hands are too full of your stuff—in other words, if you’re too full of yourself or too occupied with your phone or other gadgets—you can’t bring help or comfort to those around you.
What really matters? Take some time and work on this today! For me, my relationship with God and with my family make the top of my list. No one who truly considers what’s important will think of how much money they have in the bank, their new shoes, or their new leather sofa over spiritual health and relationships.
What I want in my life is less stuff, more time with God and my family, and more experiences! In order to get these things, I have to cut back on consumption. I also have to remember that what I have, including my money, belongs to God and is meant to be given away at times. When you declutter your life, it makes room for what really matters most.
