This past (Palm) Sunday I talked about how there is often a ‘Calm Before the Storm’ (You can get the podcast here) that can be so polar opposite the coming storm as to throw some people into a false sense of security. Sometimes the results can be deadly.
And a storm can be physical, emotional…even spiritual. There are all kinds of calms before all kinds of storms.
This isn’t news. Most people are familiar with storms in life. Everyone experiences them from time to time. If you haven’t—just wait, one is coming. And what do we do when one is on the way? We check the radar. We study them in order to prepare. But I’m not talking about the natural weather types—I’m talking about personal storms that hit all of us at one time or another—turns out most of us also have a spiritual and emotional radar for those. Even so, when life’s storms hit—many of us who have unpacked the “world’s storm preparedness kits” we got at Barnes and Nobles or from listening to Oprah or Doctor Phil—or even a friend’s, cousin’s, ex roommate’s, former girlfriend who once went through something similar—inevitably discover that these so called ‘solutions’ don’t bring any lasting relief.
But what else can we do?
Well, some people try denial.
When in denial, we counsel, medicate, or refuse to acknowledge after-affects of a tempest that hits us from out of the blue. This is because we don’t want (for some bizarre, unknown reason) to admit that we really weren’t ready for it—that we absolutely did not see it coming, or that the things we employed to combat the storm were just plain ineffective.
Wanna know what actually works?
